So far it has been word of mouth, or me just talking about my company at Networking events.

Part 1 of 2:  That makes good sense @kschreiber. Word of mouth is golden, and networking can yield really strong results. 

 

The challenge of relying on those strategies is that you aren’t in control. Networking more so, but you can only eat so many chicken taco appetizers!!

Thanks for all that you do - your leadership, attitude and positive energy are always a boost to me when I come to the QB Community.

 

Question: I run a strategic consulting business and 90% of my business currently comes via referrals (Friends, former coworkers, peers in the industry). When I need to do biz dev, how do I *appropriately* signal to this network that I am looking for new opportunities and then arm them with material to carry my message forward?   Any advice?

Hey Julie! 

 

We garner customers from targeted email blasts to specific trades, social outreach, some trade pub adverts, word of mouth, press and trade shows.

 

That said, we'd love to boost our B2C outreach for our  sustainable consumer goods (reusable dry cleaning, laundry and various other bags). We think Social is the best way to go and want to embark on some video campaigns but are open to any other budget conscious ideas and models you've seen work. 

 

Or, feel free to connect us with any companies that want to make a positive change and we'll create the perfect reusable bags for their needsSmiley Happy

Part 2 of 2: Power Tips for Getting New Clients!

 

1) Pick a NICHE!! So many entrepreneurs shy away from this for fear that they will miss out, but the exact opposite is true! When you put a stake in the ground, you can “speak their language” in your marketing, in face-to-face meeting, etc., and that’s how they know that YOUR business is the right help for THEIR business. Boom!

 

2) Take your niche one level deeper! For example, if you choose doctors as your niche, that’s good, but if you narrow further to plastic surgeons, now you’re on your  way to OWNING a market and scaling to a million (or more!)!

@Jennie, I love that you caught that word! When your audience is EXTREMELY - meaning very specifically - targeted/identified, that’s when you start to create momentum.

Julie - yes, I hear you on the fact that I'm depending on the good will of the network + my reputation for referrals - and that it needs to be part of a mx of marketing activities Smiley Happy

So expanding on the tips I shared with @kschreiber about picking a niche and then going another level (or two) in that verirical would really power up your business too. 

 

Brands, startups and NPO 1) have very different objectives, and 2) speak really different languages, so I’m guessing that you are having to water down your messaging in order to cast a wider net. 

 

So if that’s true... How comfortable would you feel picking ONE of the 3?  Ohhh this is getting juicy now - staring with the one that you can charge 4, 5, and 6 figure fees to?!?! OMG! #scaletoMULTIMILLIONS!!

Happy Wednesday! Always wishing new clients for everyone. It's sometimes a challenge to grow when you're a soloprenuer and can't quite hire additional staff support. But not giving up.

My name is Pen. I recently became a Proadvisor and my best friend and I are starting our own bookkeeping business. Right now we are doing a soft open in which we are helping a local company learn how to use QBO and assisting them with their books. They are in turn putting our name out there to other local businesses because they are pretty well connected. 

 

Our official launch is going to be on August 1st. There is a local radio station 106.3 that likes to help small, local businesses and we are looking to have a spot on their radio show the day of the official launch followed by our first QBO training class about a week later. 

 

So far we have a Facebook page and I am working on putting together our website which will feature a Comic Blog to help make accounting fun and weekly webinars to help teach people how to better understand their books. Our theory is that we want businesses to know their books, so they can own their books. 

 

Anyway, any insight that you or your lovely followers can provide would be most appreciated.

Hi @JulieatTheWELL ! I'm thinking about my "signature talk". What are some of the best ways as a startup to use it to grow my business.  I don't know though if I like the idea of speaking for free even in the beginning. Is it necessary?

Regarding hiring @redrosestudios, have you tried buying blocks of hours instead of paying people on retainer? It's a small and easy way to put your toe in the water... Let me know! J.

Hey @Pen! As promised here are my thoughts:

 

1) Love that you'll be on the radio for your "Grand Opening"! Be sure to have a call to action (CTA) so you can measure the results. That might be a special offer for the upcoming workshop, free assessment, etc. Have them use the radio station call letters/name as the promo code so you can track your success.

 

2) Ask if you can re-purpose the radio spot recording AFTER it airs on your website, social media, etc. Even consider transcribing it and turning it into a blog post with the keywords your clients will be searching for when looking for an accounting firm like yours. 

 

3) Build a written promotional campaign leading up the radio spot AND AFTER the spot - email, social posts, marketing partners emailing their clients and posting on social for you - to optimize this effort. I use a spreadsheet for a campaign like this with dates 30 days before the event, the event day, and then 30 days after. With a strategically designed 61 day promotional plan for a single marketing event, your workshop will be sold out and your business will be off to the races!!

Whoohoo to that!!!  So to answer your question, yes, it's OK to speak for free IF you have an offer that they can buy (training, coaching, product, etc.) at the end, aka a "backend"? Do you have a backend? If so, tell me about it and if not, let's build one for you! Standing by... J.
